Why did you choose to pursue the Higher Education Administration Certificate program?

This program aligned with my future goals of working in Higher Education. Before starting the program, I was working as a School Counselor for many years. I was interested in transitioning my role as an educator from K-12 setting into Higher Education and the certificate program was the perfect way to get my foot in the door.

What did you like best about the structure of the certificate program?

I enjoyed the pacing of the program. I was able to work full time and take one course at a time while working. In addition, most of the courses moved to an online structure that started at 4:30p or 7p which worked well with my work schedule.

Are there faculty or staff members who made a difference during your time in the program?

I took History of Higher Education and Higher Ed in the Digital Age with Dr. Kelly Schrum and she really made a difference in the way that I view online graduate courses. She had these unique tools to keep us engaged and involved in the content. Also, her courses pushed me to think outside of the box. It was great!

What advice would you give to an incoming certificate student?

I would say to go for it, especially if you are new to the Higher Education field or want to start to get into this field.

In what ways has the certificate helped you progress toward your career goals or opened new professional opportunities?

I would not have the same knowledge or confidence now if I did not do this program. I also used the skills from the certificate to become more heavily involved in my community. I am now a Senior Academic Advisor, an Adjunct Professor at Mason, and current Treasurer of MAAN (the Mason Academic Advising Network).
