The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is proud to honor Edwin Powell, BA Education '97, DA 99, with the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award in higher education.
Powell’s accomplished career spans education, psychology, public service, national security, and international human rights advocacy. His research interests and publications focus on education, disability advocacy, health equity, mental health, and law. Throughout his career, he has served as a human rights commissioner, government analyst, special education teacher, juvenile probation officer, high school principal, educational psychologist, and mental health expert for the District of Columbia Superior Court.
A former faculty member at Howard University College of Medicine, Powell held appointments in pediatrics/child health and community/family medicine and served as a research associate in geriatric medicine. He currently serves as special advisor to the Ministry of National Security for the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis.
