The Higher Education Program recognizes Sharrell Hassell-Goodman, candidate of the PhD in Education with a specialization in Higher Education, recipient of the 2022 Resounding Voice Award.
The Spirit of King Awards were rewarded to George Mason community members engaged in activism to improve our community as part of the annual MLK Evening of Reflection. This event took place on February 15, 2022 to honor the memory of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and recognizes members of the Mason community who actively live out his vision.
Austin Deray, chair of the Awards Nomination and Selection Committee for the 2022 MLK Evening of Reflection, shares an amalgamation of the various nominations Sharrell received:
She is a PhD candidate in the Higher Education program with a specialization in women and gender studies and social justice. Her dissertation "An Endarkened Feminist Critical Participatory Action Research Project: First-Generation Women of the African Diaspora" engages traditionally marginalized students as co-researchers. She is one of the founders of the Black Graduate Student Association at Mason. She is also the co-chair of the Student Voice Committee of the Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence Task Force and is part of the Anti-Racist Research working group. She has over 10 years of experience working as a graduate assistant and working with student groups based on diverse identities; and, has professional (fulltime) work experience with NPHC/MGC Fraternities and Sororities at The Ohio State Univeristy. At Mason, she has served as panelist and guest speaker multiple times around her identities as a Black woman, mother, student, and 1st gen individual. This year’s recipient of the Resounding Voice Award for a graduate student is Sharrell Hassell-Goodman; Congratulations!
