The primary goal of this class is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to identify policy issues, understand the policy environments, initiate a policy study to analyze the potential impacts of a policy, and present the policy study in a professional and scholarly format. To this end, I expect students of this class to reach the following learning outcomes:

  • Understanding the major policy frameworks
  • Understanding the relationship between state government and higher education policies
  • Understanding the relationship between federal government and higher education policies
  • Understanding the major policies issues challenging today’s American higher education
  • Understanding the debates behind key higher education policy issues
  • Becoming aware of the primary policy data sources
  • Being able to conduct informed discussion on key higher education policy issues
  • Presenting policy discussion in a professional and scholarly manner orally and in written format
  • Demonstrate professionalism and ethical behaviors as required to be a leader and scholar in higher education and other professional fields
  • Be an active and responsible learner and a fervent participant in the class

Intended as a toolkit for the understanding and creation of evidence-based analysis of public policy issues at all levels of governance, this course examines examples of policy research and analysis prompted from discussion around higher education policy issues. May not be repeated for credit.
Registration Restrictions:

Enrollment is limited to Graduate or Non-Degree level students.

Students in a Non-Degree Undergraduate degree may not enroll.
